Electric or Gas Scooter: Pros and Cons   by Gus Timberman

So, maybe you have already recognized the great advantages to owning and riding a scooter. It can save you a ton of money at the gas station, and the greater fuel efficiency means less carbon dioxide and a better environment.

But when it comes to deciding between a gas scooter and an electric one, you are stumped. Both seem to have their good and bad points. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Electric scooters would appear to be the obvious choice at first glance. Since they use no gasoline at all, they figure to be the better “green” choice. They are also generally lighter and easier to transport if you want to take your scooter along as convenient transportation around the RV park. Finally, their only “fuel” expense is a somewhat higher household utility bill.

On the down side, though, electric scooters are usually quite a bit more expensive than their gas counterparts. They also generally have less horsepower: a typical electric scooter will have trouble topping 25 mph on smooth, flat pavement. Lastly, most electric models will use up their charge within 2 hours, meaning that you cannot travel more than 20 miles from home… and they will take six to eight hours to recharge.

Perhaps the best advantage to gas powered scooters is that they use gasoline. This means that you will be able to fill up the tank and keep going at any service station along the way. They are also significantly cheaper than electric scooters, and with some models getting over 100 miles per gallon, continue to be easy on the pocketbook and the environment. Finally, some gas scooters are capable of speeds approaching 80 mph, performing nearly as well as smaller motorcycles.

One of the negatives of gas scooters, however, is their weight. While they are not like lifting or pushing around an anvil, they are still significantly heavier than electric models, making them harder to transport. In addition, the fact that they use even a little gasoline will still be a disappointment to the most environmentally-conscious consumers.

In the final analysis, if you are committed to going green and only need to run a few miles down the road on an occasional errand, an electric scooter might be your best choice. If you are looking for a machine that will behave much more like it truly belongs on the road with cars, trucks, and motorcycles, then a gas scooter is definitely the way to go.
