LINEUP OF RARE, NOSTALGIC & WEIRD ITEMS FOR SURF VINTAGE AUCTION by David Elliot
HONOLULU – (May 31, 2011) — Eight weeks remain before 100 years of surf collectibles go under the hammer at the Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection.
To be held at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu on Friday & Saturday, July 22nd & 23rd, the 2011 Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction will feature items that range from the nostalgic and the rare, to the downright weird! But all of them have qualified as worthy of one of the coveted 100 auction lot spots.

The nostalgic… a mid-’50s Makaha International championship trophy from the premier event in the world of surfing at that time.
The rare… a 1930’s surf sweatshirt signed by all of the Kahanamoku brothers (including Duke) and several key beachboys of the era. Pre-auction estimate: $15,000. There’s also one of Duke’s swim meet winning medals up for auction.
The weird… a collection of 36 different surf-themed beer bottles from around America, aging back 20 years, complementing the “6-pack” of beer boards – promotional surfboards formerly hung in bars to promote a variety of ales.
The coveted… a Pat Curren big wave gun, one of only 11 made. Pre-auction estimate: $20,000-$30,000. Also a California speed board made by Pat Curren found in actor Steve McQueen’s Santa Paula aircraft hanger among his collection of cars and motorbikes. Pre-auction estimate $10,000-20,000.
The lost and found… North Shore big wave rider Barry Kanaiaupuni’s personal 16-inch wide, racy pintail pocket rocket that was found among collectibles at the Hard Rock Cafe in Honolulu after being ‘lost’ for a quarter of a century. Pre-auction estimate: $7,000-$12,000.
For those interested in bidding, pre-registration turnout has been unprecedented but will remain open until all 250 bidding numbers have been allocated. We encourage you to visitwww.hawaiiansurfauction.com

The complete lineup of items will be unveiled on June 22. Each week between now and then, the “Peek of the Week” will feature a new item. Join us on Facebook to be the first to learn about new additions.
